Edward Thomas dedicò una poesia all’abrotano. Esso non attrae (avendo una foglia incisa e pelosa nella parte sottostante, col tono che tende dal verdastro al cinereo). L’abrotano è amaro, simboleggiando quanto si ricorda difficilmente il proprio passato. Edward Thomas descrive una bambina che “spenna” il lato inferiore delle foglie, e come se varcasse la porta di casa. Paradossalmente, con la memoria noi cercheremmo di “giocare”. La bambina continuerà a spuntare la manciata di foglie pelose, accartocciandone i brandelli. Per Edward Thomas, una volta era bello giocare… Il mezzobusto di Kimberly qui appare di profilo. Lei indossa un cappotto molto spugnoso. Ci ricordiamo che alla nuotatrice Kimberly serve l’asciugamano, dopo una gara. Ma la fotografia qui ha il bianconero, e predomina la pesantezza del muro lasciato al grezzo, sullo sfondo. Non c’è la giocosità d’una nuotata. Kimberly ha il volto “infagottato”. E’ l’iconografia cara al Gobbo di Notre Dame, forse. Soprattutto, ci sembra di percepire “l’accartocciarsi” della pettinatura. La testa assumerà la forma d’una sola goccia, che fungerebbe da manciata per l’acqua “pelosa” in quanto ad asciugarsi. Kimberly “s’infagotta”, per cui immediatamente noi immaginiamo che lei rammenti qualcosa d’importante. La luce cade sulla testa consentendoci di percepire i “brandelli” dei capelli. Anche l’occhio diventa “spugnoso” (con le ombre), mentre il naso “si spennerebbe” dal viso (gocciolando).

Edward Thomas dedicated a poem to the Artemisia abrotanum (Lad’s Love). It does not attract us (having a leaf sliced and hairy, with a tone that tends from the greenish to the ashen). The Artemisia abrotanum (Lad’s Love) is bitter, symbolizing how we have difficulty to remember our past. Edward Thomas describes a little girl who “pluck” the inferior side of the leaves, as if she cross the threshold of her house. Paradoxically, we would try to “play” with the memory. The little girl will continue to snip the handful of hairy leaves, shriveling their shreds. According to Edward Thomas, there was a time when to play was beautiful… The head and shoulders of Kimberly here appears in profile. She wears a coat very spongy. We remember that Kimberly as swimmer needs a towel, after a race. But the photography here has the black and white, and the heaviness of a wall still rough, on the background, predominates. There is not the playfulness of a swim. Kimberly has a “bundled up” face. That’s an iconography typical of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, maybe. Principally it seems that we perceive a “shriveling up” hairdo. The head will assume the shape of only one drop, which would function as a handful for the “hairy” water on its drying off. Kimberly “bundles herself up”, so immediately we imagine that she remembers something important for her. The light falls on the head allowing us to perceive the “shreds” of hair. Also the eye becomes “spongy” (by the shadows), while the nose “would pluck itself” from the face (dripping).
